Culture and Crisis in the Arab World: Art, Practice and Production in Spaces of Conflict (Library of Modern Middle East Studies) de Richard Jacquemond,Felix Lang

Descripción - Reseña del editor Since 2011, the art of the Arab uprisings has been the subject of much scholarly and popular attention. Yet the role of artists, writers and filmmakers themselves as social actors working under extraordinary conditions has been relatively neglected. Drawing on critical readings of Bourdieu's Field Theory, this book explores the production of culture in Arab social spaces in `crisis'. In ten case studies, contributors examine a wide range of countries and conflicts, from Algeria to the Arab countries of the Gulf. They discuss among other things the impact of Western public diplomacy organisations on the arts scene in post-revolutionary Cairo and the consequences of dwindling state support for literary production in Yemen. Providing a valuable source of empirical data for researchers, the book breaks new ground in adapting Bourdieu's theory to the particularities of cultural production in the Middle East and North Africa. Biografía del autor Richard Jacquemond is professor of Modern Arabic language and literature at Aix-Marseille Universite, and a researcher with IREMAM (Institut de Recherche et d'Etudes sur les Mondes Arabes et Musulmans, CNRS, Aix-en-Provence). A graduate in Law and Arabic studies, he lived in Cairo for some fifteen years, working as a programme officer at the French cultural mission in Egypt before writing his Ph.D. thesis on the Egyptian literary field from the 1960s to the 1990s. A member of the editorial board of Alif, Journal of Comparative Poetics (Cairo), The Translator (Routledge) and Arabica (Brill), he has published more than forty articles and edited several books and journal issues on modern Arabic literature in French, English and Arabic. He has also produced twenty French translations of works by modern Arab authors, among them eight novels by leading Egyptian writer Sonallah Ibrahim. Felix Lang is a postdoctoral research fellow in the department of Arabic Literature and Culture at the University of Marburg. He Studied Arabic and Social Anthropology at the University of St. Andrews and completed a Ph.D. in Arabic Literature and Culture at the University of Marburg.
